Salida del Sol Academy Kitchen Spotlight

From L-R: Sandra, Suki, Claudia, & Sendy.

Salida Del Sol Academy is the District's only dual language school. They switch from English to Spanish every other day. Therefore, the entire kitchen is also bilingual so that they can interact with the students in the language of the day.

The kitchen family of Salida Del Sol is very professional and has a lot of combined experience in food service and school nutrition.

Salida received a new leader in 2021 with the addition of Soccoro Aguilar (Suki), who had previously worked as a roving kitchen manager for the district following her career with the University of Northern Colorado in their large kitchen operations. Claudia Rae Medina is the veteran kitchen specialist 2 for the team, and she even helped manage the kitchen between kitchen managers for many months. She is fiercely passionate about her job and works to ensure that the students of SDSA receive everything they need. Sendy Rodriguez Gomez and Sandra Estrada De Borunda are the two KS1s at Salida. However, even as KS1s, you will see that the team works as one if you visit their kitchen. Everyone does every job, switching between cooking, serving, running the point of service, or doing dishes (without a dishwashing machine). The whole team contributes to feeding over 3000 meals each week, not including FFVP, to all students K-8 or supper meals they serve to afterschool programs.

Salidas' team is a family, and they show it through their fun in the kitchen, their get-togethers outside the kitchen, and their support of each other through difficult times. I am so thankful for my team at Salida, and I enjoy every visit where I get to practice my Spanish and share in their smiles.
